14 Konyo Bankoku Zenzu (the Map of the World)
The Sendai domain was enthusiastic in the pursuit of studies and culture from foreign countries. This world map is a copy of the large, block-printed map published in Beijin in 1602 by a missionary of the Society of Jesus, named Matteo Ricci. Very few copies are still in existence worldwide. With three copies in Japan, this particular one is a complete edition with the badge of the Society of Jesus on it. It was designated as the National Important Cultural Property in 1990.
