The “DATE Culture” Fostered by Masamune
2 Jinbaori surcoats owned by the successive lords of the Sendai domain (Black wool jinbaori surcoat with red mountains motif owned by DATE Masamune)

This particular surcoat is characterized with details such as gold and silver braids decorating the black cloth, scarlet mountain shapes designed at the hems, and a delicate sawing technique known as “kiribame”, which makes the seam virtually invisible. There is a remnant of frills that used to decorate its collar, which indicates the so-called Nanban style elements that was popular during the Momoyama period.
