The “DATE Culture” Fostered by Masamune
7 Partition painting of phoenixes from the Honmaru great hall of Sendai Castle
It is a “Damie” painting painted by the “Kano” school during the Momoyama period (1573-1615). It used to decorate the “Jodannoma” room, in which the lord of the domain sat in the “Ohiroma (large hall)” of Sendai Castle. It represents the spirit of DATE Masamune, spectacular and full of ambition. It was made into a folding screen at the dismantling of the “Honmaru Goten (the main enclosure),” and is the only remaining cultural property that demonstrates the interior decoration of the building at that time. An actual size model of the painting can be viewed at the “Sendai Kenbunkan.”
※It is not open to the public on a regular basis.
