The “DATE Culture” Fostered by Masamune
38 Osawa no Taue Odori (Rice Planting Dance of Osawa)
It is said that this particular style of dance was once commended by the second lord Tadamune, and was given permission to use the symbol that resembled the family emblem of the DATE family called “Take ni suzume (bamboo and sparrow)” on the kimono of dancers called “Saotome”. The dance inherits the style of the old times well, and is performed by adult men who are dressed in female kimono (furisode) to become “Saotome”. The tradition stopped temporarily, but was revived again in 1981. Today’s preservation society was established in 1983. The dance is performed regularly at the annual festival of Yasaka shrine every August.
