20 Shiogama-jinja (Shinto shrine)

As the guardian deity of the Tohoku region, this “jinja” was highly revered by the Imperial Court, and was an object of faith for the FUJIWARA family of Hiraizumi and the DATE family of the Sendai domain lords. The lords of the Sendai domain successively served as the “Okannushi” in the ceremony following Masamune. The construction of the pr esent “jinja” building was initiated by the fourth lord Tsunamura in 1695, and was completed by the fifth Yoshimura in 1704. This “jinja” was designated as the National Important Cultural Property in 2002.

1. Shiwahiko Shrine

Shiwahiko Shrine is one of the one-hundred shrines of the Mutsu Province that are dedicated to major deities, recorded in the old code of laws titled “Engishiki”. It is designated as the Cultural Property of Shiogama City.

2. Kyu-Kameitei Old Residence

This house was built in 1924, with a unique architectural style known as “Japan-western Integrated House”, which combined factors of a western house into a traditional Japanese-style house. Very few buildings with this style are in existence today.

3. Kyu-Ebiyaryokan Old Residence

This is a hotel building in the architectural style of the early Meiji period. During the Imperial Tour of the Tohoku Region by the Emperor Meiji, the state councilor OKUMA Shigenobu stayed at this ryokan (Japanese-style hotel). Restoration was done after the earthquake, and it holds a café on the first floor, and “Machikado Museum” on the second and third floors.

4. Okama Shrine

This shrine is a subordinate shrine of Shiogama-jinja (Shinto shrine). Its Shinto ritual of salted seaweed baking that takes place in July is designated an intangible cultural property by the prefecture. The four divine water pots are believed to change the color of water when there is a disaster approaching, and are counted as one of the three great strange things in Japan.

5. Shiogama Sugimura Jun Museum of Art

Utilizing a building that was built in 1950 originally as a public hall, the museum holds the works of a western-style painter SUGIMURA Jun, who is closely related to Shiogama City. Along with the collection, the unique architecture of the building, such as the arch-shaped large lecture hall made of laminated boards, is also worth observing.

6. Urakasumi Sake Gallery

Aside from sales and tasting of Japanese sake, the gallery provides reservation-based tour guide of the brewery, where the staff give lectures on the history of the company.

7. Shiogama-Kaido St

The Kitahamasawaoto Prefectural Road, which runs in front of Shiogama-jinja (Shinto shrine), is considered as “the Museum on the Road”. Elegant buildings as well as monuments and steles with Japanese poetry engraved on them line up alongside the road.
