31 Oki-no-i

This place became a popular poetical subject thanks to Japanese poems by ONONO Komachi and other famous poets. As a part of the Sendai domain’s maintenance project for scenic and historic sites, the fourth lord Tsunamura appointed the local leaders to the position of “Oki-no-i Mori”, and made it their responsibility to provide great care for the protection.

1. Tagajo Shiyukan (Tagajo Historical Museum)

Facility contains exhibition rooms that display the history of Tagajo City from the Jomon to Edo periods, as well as experiential learning facilities where visitors can learn about the techniques of old times.

This municipal library was moved and reopened in March 2016. The building was designed under the concept of “home”, aiming to be such a comfortable place that everyone wants to come back. Its multi-purpose capability corresponds to various needs of users.

3. Matsushima Kamaboko Honpo Tagajo Factory

The factory for the famous fish cake is equipped with its own retail store, where visitors can purchase fresh products out of the factory. Our most popular tofu cake “Muu” is also available fresh out of the fryer for purchase. Sasakama fish cake baking experience tour is also available (pay service).

4. Teizan Canal

This canal was constructed by the fourth lord of the Sendai domain, DATE Tsunamura, in order to transport the rice produced in the northern part of the domain to the castle town. The name of the canal was taken after the posthumous name of the initiator of the plan, DATE Masamune.
