35 Tomiyama Kannondo and Bonsho

35 Tomiyama Kannondo and Bonsho

Legend has it that the Kannondo hall is related to SAKANOUENO Tamuramaro (758-811 AD), the first Shogun from the Heian period. The colorful hall that stands today was repaired under the order of the first daughter of DATE Masamune, “Irohahime.” The temple bell dedicated by Irohahime also remains today right next to the hall. Tomiyama is considered to be one of the four greatest scenic overlooks of Matsushima Bay. There is a reference in the diary left by Sora, the pupil who accompanied haiku master MATSUO Basho on his journey, which talks about its scenic beauty.
