The “DATE Culture” Fostered by Masamune
40 Dance performances of Shishiodori and Kenbai of Fukuoka
It is believed that Kenbai was brought in to this area in 1649, and Shishiodori a few years later, by Ryohoji temple, which was in charge of managing the dances of Shishiodori and Kenbai in the castle town of Sendai. This particular style of Shishiodori and Kenbai dances is especially known as “Hachimando-kei” style within the domain, and is believed to be the origin of all Shishiodori dances that are widespread from southern Iwate Prefecture to northern Miyagi Prefecture.
